Uvalde C.I.S.D. & America's Solar Eclipse

Greetings Uvalde C.I.S.D. Parents and Guardians,

Monday, August 21st is the first day of school for Uvalde C.I.S.D. and for the Uvalde area a partial solar eclipse! Many parents have inquired about how students in Uvalde C.I.S.D. will be handling the Total Solar Eclipse on the first day of school. The optimal viewing time falls during the school day at 1:06 PM.  Our school day schedule will continue as normal.

We will make sure that our teachers are informed about the safety recommendations published by NASA, and that those are shared with our students. Some, but not all, of our teachers may take children outside to see the eclipse depending on what is occurring in class. When possible, our teachers may use alternative ways to see the eclipse such as those discussed in the safety tips. The district does not have eclipse sunglasses, so we encourage students to bring eclipse sunglasses to view the eclipse if they have them. Normal sunglasses do not work and will not provide proper eye protection.

For parents, you can learn more about appropriate safety precautions at this link:  https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

Please talk to your child about the dangers of looking at the eclipse without proper eyewear. We will also emphasize this to them at school. As well, as share with them that it is never safe to look directly at the sun. If you would like for your child to remain indoors rather than possibly participate in activities outdoors to view the eclipse, please notify his/her teacher.

This is a rare event, and we want our children to learn from it while being safe. Thanks for your help!

I wish you and your child a wonderful first day of school!
